New guy here. Been lurking for a long time. Now it time to start posting. I bought this Craftsman miter box and saw at the flea market. Can't seem to find much info on it. I want to know when it was made. If there are any missing parts and the quality compared to similar setups. If I decide to sell it for something better, how much is this one worth? Thanks for any help.:)

If I'm not mistaken, that's a Langdon All-Steel Miter Box that's been re-branded for Sears. I've got one like it and it's a good user. Some of the older Langdon miter boxes used cast iron, which can shatter against concrete, so you see them with broken or welded bases. The steel will take a bit more of a bump. I think they made them for workmen who take their tools to a work site. Yours looks like one from the 1940s - 1950s, and the handle on the saw is a replacement I'd guess. Don't know about value--whatever someone will pay for it. Here's a link to instructions (http://www.wkfinetools.com/hUS-borTools/MillersFalls/pubs/mf-MiterBoxes/MF-MiterBox-HowTo.asp). Just a gentle nudge down the slippery slope . . . .

Matthew,

Welcome to the talkative side of the Creek. Your profile does not list your location, but from what looks like sun shine I would guess it isn't near me lately.

Here is the list to confirm what Jonathan said:

The 107 does lead back to Millers Falls.

Looks like a good find.

Thanks guys. The handle is not original and has to go. The angle is too low and it makes it uncomfortable to use. Thanks to your links I can make a faithful reproduction.

Looks like a Millers Falls Langdon. In my accumulation of miter boxes, I have a Craftsman tagged box, that has parts virtually interchangeable with a similarly sized Langdon. The Craftsman is interesting in that it seems to have quite a few parts chrome plated. Excellent miter box and probably as good as they get (or at least as good as any of us would ever need!).

Finally got a chance to make a new handle and clean her up a bit. The handle is maple with four coats of Minwax Tung Oil. I'm glad I was able to use the original screws. I started the restore some other saws and broke a couple screws. Next up is the miter box.
