View Full Version : Corel X4 - Rounded corner tool weirdness

I came across some weirdness in the tools used to round corners of a rectangle in Corel Draw X4 where the actual radius is not consistent.

1) Using the Rectangle Tool (F6) draw a rectangle and dimension it to 4" wide and 2" tall.
2) Round the corners using the "Rounded Corner Toolbar" or the SHAPE TOOL to 25.
3) Duplicate the object and rotate it 90 degrees
4) Select both objects then align TOP (T) and LEFT (L)

When you zoom in on the corner you get this:
186294

The four corners do NOT have the same radius.

Now, if you repeat the process above replacing step #2 with the following:

2a) Click on WINDOW > DOCKERS > FILLET/SCALLOP/CHAMFER
2b) Set Operation to FILLET and Radius to 0.25"
2c) Select the rectangle, then click APPLY

You get this:

186295

The four corners have the same radius.

I usually use the toolbar tool or shape tool to round the corners as it's very convenient.
But having to use the Fillet Docker is kinda annoying.

I thought it might have been a scaling issue between a square and rectangle,
but if you take a 2" square and round the corners to 100 it's off too.

The top shape is done with the rounded corner tool, the bottom with the fillet 1" tool:

186296

Anyone else seeing this issue by chance?

Yup - it's annoying! Because of the problem, I only use fillet/chamfer for anything important.

The problem only seems to occur if you resize the rectangle after it has been drawn.

Setting up a grid or guides so that the rectangle is exactly to size first time is usually more trouble than using the fillet/chamfer method.

I've been using Corel since V8 and when you re-size a rectangle that has always happened. You can use the fillet tool or one of several macros available on the internet. Oberon, for example.

I thought it was happening when you resize, but that's not true either.

Picture36 is a drawn/dimensioned 2" x 2" square, THEN then corners are rounded.

The top image is the corners rounded using the "rounded corners" tool on the toolbar.
The bottom image is the corners rounded using the "fillet" tool.

There is no post resizing going on.

Robert

Try re-sizing and see how bad it gets. That's my point.

Yeah, it does get worse when you resize.
But I was trying to say that you don't even have to resize to have this occur.

The really sad part is it's been a bug since at least v8 and now we're on v15?!
You would think that Corel would have fixed this by now, surely they are aware of it.

It seems to be better in X5 but it's still not fixed. The fillet tool is the only option other than the macros from other sources.

For my purposes, mostly name tags and labels, as long as I size the piece first then I get acceptable results.

I have always relied on running the GMS file, "rounded corners macro". It works fine for

FWIW, I came across this and has some nice functionality/samples...
