Hello, all -

I'll be in Seattle in early May and was wondering if there are any good woodworking stores to visit. I'm not looking for a Rockler or Woodcraft (although those are welcome, I have them closer to home), but was wondering if there is someplace unique and worth visiting. I'll have the truck with me, so there's a (slim) possibility of bringing home goodies. :)

TIA,

daniel

Since you aren't getting any replies, I can't resist mentioning something I've always wondered about.

I've never been to Seattle. However, I notice there is a Tashiro's Hardware in Seattle and on the web you can find it listed as good source of Japanese saws. As far as I know, I'm unrelated to the owner(s). Do a search on "Frank Tashiro" and you'll get some hits.

You might find Port Townsend out on the peninsula a good day trip. It has a lot of Wooden Boat builders and I believe a Wooden Boat celebration there, am not sure of the time of the year for that. At the very least it is a beautiful drive out to there. If you have more time, take the Ferry over to Victoria, BC and tour Buschart Gardens. http://www.butchartgardens.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 An out of this world garden created by a dedicated gardener in an old quarry.

There is so much to do in Puget Sound Area that you can do something different every weekend for years and never repeat.

Another area is the Wooden Boat Store on Lake Washington. Enjoy your stay. I loved the area when I lived there in the early 90's.

I would reccomend here http://www.nwfinewoodworking.com/seattle_washington.htm and even McKinnons furniture here http://mckinnonfurniture.com/ These tow stores are about 1 mile apart. Mckinnons is within walking distance of the aquarium, pike place market and the docks where all the touristy stores are and the Argosy cruises as well.

Also out I think in Port Townsend check out Edensaw Lumber, they will have amazing huge slabs and other wonderful wood stuff. I have only been to the one that used to be in Kent but heard the other day this one puts that one to shame.
Also for nice woodworking tools, like planes and japanese saws an measuring tools go to Hardwicks http://ehardwicks.com/store/seattlestore.html

Yes, just south of the West Seattle bridge, about halfway between downtown and the Boeing airfield. I've never been to the Seattle store, nor Edensaw, so don't know how the two compare.

There is no comparison even from the kent store that edensaw used to have to crosscut.I heard the port townsend one is amazing. Crosscut even took out there area of wide boards and bookmatched pieces etc and just leave them in the racks. I like crosscut dont get me wrong. Its just not very exciting anymore but there is alot of different types of wood there.

Thanks, all. I've been out of town for a while and forgot to check this thread. I will make a point of researching and trying to do as much of these as I can - looks like it'll be a fun trip! :)
