I started turning this in November, just completed it last week. It from a very large maple tree, well over 100 years old, that grew in front of my grandfathers house. Was cut down a little over a year ago and dragged to a burn pile. I was able to rescue enough to fill the back of our Hyundai Santa Fe! Finish is Watco Teak Oil, buffed with Don Pencil system. 5" x 5".

Wow, Kelvin, that's better than any NE bowl I've ever done! Then again, I've never done one... Seriously, though, the wood looks really cool. Did you stain it, or was it that dark? I have a lot to learn about form and the likes, so I can't comment on that. But I can say that I do like it. Good job.

Kelvin, nice job. Aren't NE's fun. There is something about their organicness, is that a word, that always reminds me why I love wood. Great that it came from a special place, makes it all that more wonderful a piece.

Nice piece Kelvin, and the fact that there is family history behind it for you makes it that much more special for you and your family.

Kelvin, great history with that piece! I hope that it becomes a family heirloom, too. Ambrosia, color and figure, along with some good form have left you with a beautiful turning.

Very very nice! Great form and I love the color of the wood! Also like that you were able to keep the bark intact! Yup - quite the showpiece! Thanks for sharing!

Kelvin,

You have done a great job on this piece. The form is very good and the wood is beautiful. It is great that you were able to save that wood from the burn pile. The family connection can now last forever.

It is a very nice piece, good form & wood. It is usually tough to keep the bark on wood that has been down that long. Good job.

I really like the bananna holding capacity of this one!!! The colors are great and like the shape...kinda baseball'ish style.

Very cool looking NE bowl. I don't think I have ever seen maple so dark so I have to asume that some color must have been added.

I applied a coat of Watco Teak Oil then buffed it. There was no stain, and the Teak oil made very little difference. The wood was very dark from the start, maybe something to do with age or how it had weathered? This is my first item of maple, I have quite a lot more from the same tree so it will be interesting to see how the rest turns out.

Nicely done Kelvin. It has good shape, finish, bottom, and you held on the NE. Sounds like we will be seeing more of this wood in the future.
