this is the first thing i have turned in a while its for my cousins wedding gift i guess. so should i turn the funky bottom off of it and give it the traditional bowl look ? the bowl extends into the tenon oops going for thin uniform wall thickness is new to me. this is bowl #7 i think and yet again i have yet to keep one thing i have turned ... i noticed i had the bowl spinning @ 1k+ rpm and didn't even notice a lot faster then i used to turn bowls at.

holdfast works amazingly well besides leaving a mark in the poly, but it arrived today and i had to try it out. input is welcome !

9+'' x 3 3/4'' wall thickness is under 1/4th bot is 1/4th blo + wop

Beautiful wood David!!! The finish shows off the grain very well. I'm liking the base more and more as I look at it. Nice work!!

I agree with you, I think it would look better with a minimal foot, but that wood is amazing. Your cousin should love it.

Wow Really nice David, I like the foot but maybe a bit smaller.

Are you finding this type of wood here in town? The wood you use is usually pretty nice.

Extraordinary wood!!! Nice work on the bowl, but I would reduce the foot to about a third of the diameter, or a little less.

That is a beauty. I would go with a smaller or no foot but if the bowl extends into the tenon you may be out of luck taking much off.

I am not sure that anything you did would make a difference. The wood is so nice, that is all could see when looking at it.

David - sure is a pretty bowl! reminds me of a rice bowl and as such - the foot fits! About the only thing I would do is recess the foot area and then apply finish. Your cousins will love the gift! Very nice work!

What a beautiful piece of Maple. I find it extraordinary that there can be so much variation in two pieces of wood of the same variety. I like the shape and the finish is great!

That is a beautiful piece of wood. I don't really think the foot is doing it any favors. I would round it off, or go with Steve's rice bowl observation and just pare it done a bit.
