Awhile back I polished up a Buffalo horn as best I could. I'll never attempt that again, as buffalo horn is mostly course hair, compared to cow horn... Anyway, Mesquite turnings on the ends of the cow horn, and mesquite bandsawed to fit the irregular shape of the Buffalo horn. I then found center, drilled a 3/4" hole, and turned a plug to use as a tether point for the strap... I then hand filed the mesquite on both bottoms of the horns so they would fit up into the horns. Drilled for brass screws, and then filed the heads off. I decided to throw in a few unfinished points I've made. .... Clear lacquer on both.... Jerry (in Tucson)

Jerry, those are really neat!! I used to build flintlocks and made several powder horns with scrimshaw, etc. Never worked with buffalo horn, but I used to boil the ends of the horns and then you can drive a tapered plug in the end to make them round. That way, you could turn a cap to fit without having to hand fit it.

Nice flintknapping, too!

I was gonna say Mr K and maybe Bill Grumbine would be prime suspects for these...of course Davy Crockett is dead.

Pretty cool, Jerry. I don't know what I'd do with one, but they're neat looking.

Nice work, Pilgrim! I've got a couple old smoke poles that those would look great with.
