This Russian Olive blank was cracked really bad. But I love the wood so I decided to try and save it by filling the cracks. I used black epoxy mixed with copper shavings on the big cracks, just epoxy on the smaller ones. The blank had a big divot in the top so I just started hollowing and let the opening follow the shape of the divot. It has an egg shape overall. It's 7 x 5.5 inches. Antique Oil but not buffed yet.

Curt, another nice "rustic" piece!! That Russian Olive does well in your hands, and you have done some nice pieces from it. I think I mentioned before that it apparently is not invasive in our area, but is all around KY. I will keep my eye open for some!

Curt - another beauty! Great color and when combined with the growth rings - reminds me of Tigers-eye gemstones! Very pretty!

This piece is very nice Curt, the shape in a way reminds me of a Geode you would find broken open.

Very cool, Curt. The grain in that stuff is fantastic. I'm not sure about the metallic flakes in the epoxy, but I'll have to study it a bit more. The natural 'divot' is great, and I find these pieces deceptively hard to hollow... It looks like a cavernous opening when at rest, but the effective working opening is considerably less when rotating. I love the shape of this one. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice piece, Curt and well worth the effort. The wood is beautiful, the form interesting and I like the copper.

Turned out well. I would have had a hard time pitchin that wood also.
