View Full Version : Attaching a Faceplate to Punky Wood...

Ever wonder how to fasten a faceplate to wood that's too punky for a tenon or to hold screws? Here's a method that I've used for a lot of years.

In this case I'm using a 4 in. faceplate with 6 screws. I mark where each screw will go, then, using my drill press, I bore a 1/2 in. hole an inch or so deep for each screw. I then glue a hardwood dowel into each hole. Now when I install the faceplate I'm putting the screw into side grain hardwood. Can't get any more secure than that.

Might the same technique with either 4 or eight dowels be adapted for turning a tenon for a deep 4-jaw chuck?

Well, it might. Lots of solid wood there. I would still prefer a faceplate. A well secured faceplate is still the best IMO
