Here is the finished Sweet Gum Bowl that was posted earlier in the dried rough turn state. The final dimension is 15 3/8" D x 5 3/4" H x 1/4" WT with 3/4" rim and final weight of 2.95#, a long ways from the 100# original blank a couple of years ago. The finish is BLO/MS/PUV and Tripoli buffing with final Renaissance Wax. It is going to a charity auction and hopefully someone will have an interest.

very nice, how do you like turning sweet gum?, did you drill a pilot hole for depth, if yes did the wood seem to grab the drill bit?

That's really nice looking! I've got a couple sweet gum smaller bowls, it turns really nice. You've done a great job there! Hope it brings big bucks!

Great bowl Tom! It looked even better close up last Saturday! It's time I took my chainsaw to the Sweet Gum I got last April and see what I can do with it!

Being from the UK I have no idea what sweetgum is like, but looking at this it has some beautiful grain. A really nice bowl and I hope it does really well in your charity auction :)

Thanks for the comments and compliments. The Sweet Gum turned OK but is not a really hard wood and is subject to some tearout. Sharp tools, sanding to 400, and then Tripoli buff did get a nice surface for finish, and the oil really made the wood come to life. The wood came from a tree just across the property line that dumped the majority of leaves and gumballs on my yard, and I am glad it is now being turned into hopefully something that can be enjoyed.
