My in-laws did some landscaping and pulled up a boxwood hedge last summer. I saved the root ball. I thought it might make a good chisel handle. I decided to make a vase type turning with it instead. It still has a little root in it. It didn't fly off the lathe this time. About 5" tall X 3" wide

That is a knarly piece of wood! I find it interesting you could do a form like this with it..........nice stuff!

Glad it stayed on the lathe. Makes a vase with a lot of character!

Now, that is a wild looking piece!! Very neat! I bet it was full of dirt and the ol' gouge had to be sharpened a few times.

I hit a couple of small quartz rocks. I could tell exactly when that happened. The gouge was instantly dull.
