This is the first bowl I completed from the wood I got from Mike Smith as part of the fall contest at the creek. It is turned from Curly Red Wood. This bowl has around 8 coats of spray deft lacquer satin right now. I will post some more pictures after it has had time to set and be buffed to a shine. The curl in this wood is unreal and it didn't move any as it dried. I did learn that redwood should not be turned extremely thin. I have a tiny crack on one side of the opening that happened when sanding just on the inside lip of the bowl. If it had been left around 3/16" it wouldn't have happened. I'm thinking of turning a collar to help reinforce the opening. The bowl is right at 11" in dia by 5" high.
Thanks,
Jack Mincey

Real nice work Jack. The curl really looks like flames from an old hot rod. Very cool.

That is some amazing figure and a nice way to show it off. Seems a shame to put a collar on it unless the crack shows up a lot more than can be seen in these pictures, or are you worried about it growing in the future?

Jack, when I saw the unfinished turning of this, it was obvious it was going to be fantastic - and, it is!! I am really looking forward to getting into the pieces I got from Mike.
