2 part question

1) does anyone know what wood they use to make Popsicle sticks from?

2) any source for sheet material?

Pretty sure they are birch.
You could try veneer suppliers - probably as "constructional veneer" (a bit thicker and much cheaper than the fine veneers for inlaying).

Mike,
Not an X pert (an X pert is a drip under pressure) but I imagine it's birch. Sheets of baltic birch plywood are readily available but that is not the same. It is more than likely milled from birch logs, I would guess it is Northwestern US wood.

Here is a link http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071014010015AAZr2bc

and...here is a link to a place that has some sheet http://www.woodnshop.com/Hardwood/PRECISION18.htm (http://www.woodnshop.com/Hardwood/PRECISION18.htm)
(might not be white birch though)

Mike - I'll go against the grain and the poplar opinion say that they are made of "poplar". But I suppose birch could be an alternative. The same site Larry linked to also has poplar.

I'll go with birch as well. Poplar is too irregular in color.

The WoodnShop that Larry has linked to is a local internet supplier and I have purchased from them several times. Always very happy with the transaction and what a selection.

Ouch!!!! The Wood Shop seems a bit high for 12 x 24 birch.

Mike have you tried a local lumber supply in your area? Many carry plywoods in 1/8" thickness of differing types. Tom "Buzz" Bernard says he can get it for under $10 a sheet in Atlanta and Mike Kowalczyk (in Houston) here on the Creek can cut it up for you and ship. I think Mike is better than the Wood Shop. IMHO :cool::cool::cool:

I purchase my thin boards from this guy. Excellent wood and reasonably priced.

Terry,

They have to be "Food Safe" cannot use plywood for the application.

They have the 1/8 wood at woodNshop however I need it in 1/16 or 3/32 and they would need a lot of pcs. Maybe I will have to invest in a good planer / drum sander. I do not want to I would rather find some where to get it already this thickness.

Thanks to everyone now I know what to search for.

Mike:
Try these people, they have like 40% of the world market for wood sticks. They used to be in China but are now in Canada. They can probably put you on somebody that can sell you the sticks http://www.global-sticks.net/web2/

During a quick search I found these guys:

they push plywood, but obviously they can supply straight Birch. They're in China, but if you need a lot, well...
