This lidded box is made with East Indian Rosewood and African Blackwood. I had not turned these woods before. They both turned and finished well. I can see why the "stick" turners like the Blackwood.

The piece was finished with a couple of quick coats of AO and a buff.

Mark, that is a beautiful piece!! I like what you did with the underside of the lid. Is that blackwood showing on the underside? Great color combo with the woods, too.

Thanks John. Yes the blackwood is going through the lid. I was going to do some more finial under there, but the only blackwood that I have is some bottle stopper blanks. So I just jammed the lid onto the blackwood, got the curve, added the rings and then took the lid off and turned the finial in a jam chuck. The rosewood really has a nice color. I need to reshoot the pics, they are getting way to compressed when I upload them, loosing some detail.

That's a great looking box! I haven't had the pleasure of turning East Indian rosewood, but if this is a good representation, I'll likely be trying to get my hands on some.

Nice box, it kinda looks like ironwood to me. I like the finial, it begs to be picked up. Nice bottom on your lid as well.

Mark that's a pretty box. I have the same thoughts that Dad does about it; I want to pick it up. For me, that is how I know that I really like something.

Great looking work with any wood but your combination makes it even better! Did you color the inside of your box with something? Looks darker than the outside on my screen.

Outstanding Mark!! Simple and beautiful. I'm having trouble with the definition of the inside lid, but that's a photo thing. Any dimentions?

Thanks all. I got the wood at our local Woodcraft. They have had some better priced exotics lately. Kind of a separate grouping then the usual pieces. The blackwood was on a bottle stopper special they had. They were about 75 cents each.

Did you color the inside of your box with something?
Baxter, the inside is the same as the outside, it is not buffed though, so a little less sheen.

Any dimentions?
Jim, the piece is about 3 5/8 x 5. The lid is 1/16" thick and the bowl is give or take 3/16" thick.

Great looking box. My hard drive crashed a couple of days ago and I lost all the pictures I saved of pieces to inspire my future turnings. This is the first of the new batch!
