Don't know what else to call it, seems to be too shallow for a bowl, and too tall for a plate or platter. Turned it this weekend from a piece of the redbud I cut down in my backyard about a year and a half ago. 4 3/4" diameter and 1 1/4" tall. Sides about 1/8" thick and bottom about 1/4". Finished with gloss lacquer, still needs to be buffed. C&C welcome.:D

It's a pretty little dish. Redbud is such pretty wood, but just about everything I've turned from it has cracked to some degree.

Really nice wood and like the flat drop edge,on a piece this small it makes it look more finished.

I haven't turned any Redbud, but it sure looks worth it! It looks like you have left the pith in this bowl, and that will encourage cracking - which looks to have started already.

Tom,
You did well with this piece. I agree with John K...you stand a better chance if you can get rid of the first several years of growth (pith) with any wood.

Redbud can have some of the most beautiful grain colors when growing in the right conditions (I had harvested some several years ago that had alternating green and orange striping). It is one of those trees that grows with lots of defects (due to dead branch areas not healing over, etc) that can cause it to crack. It seldom grows vertical (the trees grow twisted) which puts more stress on the wood. It cracks quite quickly as it dries (DAMHIKT).

Lovely wood and you did a fine setup job getting the grain centered just right...Bill...
