Below is a winged Dogwood bowl. 8 5/8" x 8 1/2" x 1 1/4" One of the few pieces of Dogwood I've completed without considerable checking or splitting.

Finish is pure Tung Oil.

Tony, that looks sweet! Really nice color, too. Just after I started turning, I cut some Mulberry and walnut crotches about this size. I need to go to the barn and see what they look like now.

Thanks, John. I haven't tried turning walnut like this. The sapwood / heartwood contrast would look interesting.

That looks nice, I like the thickness that you made it (thick enough to be strong, thin enough to look refined).

That looks great. I agree with Dennis about the thickness... It's just right. Well done.

Nice work John, good looking wood also.
I did a couple of Walnut crotches, they do look quite nice I think, also I like to add something like a rim around the actual bowl, it sets it apart and makes it look more interesting, just IMO of course ;)

Very well done, balanced, uniform and beautiful wood.

Nice work. I really like this piece. Like the others said - not too thick, but not too thin - just right. These must be a bit tricky - watch your fingers or you might find that the dogwood bites (I guess it would matter if it was dogwood - it would still bite).

Thanks for the kind words.

Rich, the winged bowls do make you remember which side of the rest you're supposed to be on.

Leo, I'm with you on the rim treatment. Even the simplest detail added to the rim really dresses up the look. I like the samples you posted. Very nicely done.

I'm with everyone else on this one. I really like it. The depth seems to work just right for this one. Dogwood is a really noce wood to work with. I tried making a goblet/chalice from it. It turned out great the day I turned it. Split and warped on me over night. I had thought it was dry enough. Had been sitting in the corner for 6 or 7 years. Hoping yours doesn't.

Nice work Tony! I actually like the way the bowl portion was left as part of the branch and not highlighted as a separate portion of the wood. To me it just flows better because there is nothing there to interrupt the grain.

The dogwood looks great. Winged bowls were one of the first things I wanted to try after a basic bowl. Yours is a very nice one!

Tony,

This is sweet ! I watched a Bill Grumbine video on making one of these, and I really want to try one, but the spinning crotch has me just a little intimidated ! The thickness looks excellent.

Nice work Tony! Hope to see that one live at next meeting. Looks great from here...and I agree with sentiments about dogwood checking/splitting...yikes...that stuff is purdy but has short shelf life around me.
