This is "Katrina Tree 2" a maple platter inlayed with calcite, mica and woodburned. It's 13" in diameter. Was first turned last June at 14" but after a week in my un-airconditioned garage in Pensacola's heat and humidity it warped bad. Tossed in it the junk wood pile only to pick it up last month to practice on it after a 6 month hiatus from woodturning. In truing the rim, I had to remove 1" of the diameter and it became too thin to inlay with calcite (that requires about 1/4") so I used inlace on it. The calcite would have looked better. Incuding a picture of the real tree which is a few miles from the house we lost in Hurricane Katrina. Thought it would look better with a thicker trunk. Most of the trees along Hwy 90 on the Mississippi Coast are like this with limbs facing the water torn off and the body of the tree leaning inland.

Bill, I recall the first of these you posted nearly a year ago (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?134125-Maple-Platter-w-Crystal-Mineral-Inlays/page2)- such nice work on this one, too! Beautifully done on the inlay tree, and on the "redo" with the inlace. Glad you were able to save this wonderfully done piece!

This is top shelf! Very nicely figured wood as a palette, and then the artwork is very good as well. Pretty stuff indeed!

Very well done Bill. You've made a nice piece of wood into a work of art. I'd like to try this sort of thing myself someday.

Excellent work Bill! Looks like 6 months off didn't hurt you any! Pretty wood but am amazed at your woodburning artistry and inlay skills! Beautiful work! Thanks for sharing! Hope this means you are going to start turning again! Looking forward to seeing more of your work real soon!

A great way to remember a part of the coast, that will never look the same.

Beautiful work Bill! What kind of a burr did you use to carve into the piece for the inlay? Thanks and glad to hear you're back in the shop!

Thank you all for your knid and inspirational words. Makes a guy want to give up fishing. Cheryl, I will PM you the list of the three burrs I used with the dremel tool. Have spent quite a bit ofc time in the garage at the lathe lately and am planning to either air condition it or build a shop if the covenants of my sub-division allow.
