183144this is a cherry bowl given to mary and i for a wedding gift february 1945.turned by the father of a girl friend. two pieces.base is attached with a screw. bottom covered with felt. 66 years of patina.

Interesting piece, particularly in its design/construction, as it was made entirely with faceplates and before the introduction of the modern chuck. Therefore the two part construction, the pedestal design, and the felt.

Unless you were very experienced and proficient at jamb chucking, there was no other way of reversing the piece back then. So, the bowl component was turned in one operation, inside and out. The foot was turned separately. The components were then screwed together from the bottom and the screw head and screw holes left on the foot from the faceplate covered with felt to completes the 'finish'.

Also worth remembering that the bowl gouge, as such, wasn't about then either.

Nice execution given the techniques available at the time.

there is no evidence of a faceplate. it appears that the screw hole for attaching base was also used for a screw drive.obviously turned totaly with scrapers..i turned a lot of pieces before i knew a bowl gouge existed.
