My C-20's grill was missing the bowtie when I got it back in 2002. I checked with Chevy and they were $56! I couldn't believe it...plastic and not that great looking and $60 with tax!!!

Well I looked over into the cutoff bins and saw some Cherry left over from a blanket chest I built for a client...then I knew what was coming next....here's the results...first the Cherry blanket chest, then the original Cherry Bowtie and finally the new one....can anyone guess what the wood is? :D

Looks like sedua (aka shedua) to me. Nice stuff, but don't see it too often. -- Paul

I don't think that anyone is going to guess this one! Kelly shared it with me this afternoon when we met at Steve Jenkin's shop...and I've already forgotten the name, but trust me, you probably never heard of it!!! And it ain't from around these here parts, either...;)

Could it be Marado? Not sure of that spelling but it looks quite similar to a piece I have.

My guessing game isn't really fair is it Jim?

The wood is called Dillenia and it comes from Papua New Guinea. I met someone who imports wood from PNG where he was a missionary for many years. He had dropped off several examples and this was one of them. The Bowtie gets mounted to the grill today, I'll snap a pic of it mounted soon.

Good guesses but sorry, but no door prizes for this one. I was curious to see if anyone had seen this wood before. It's really very nice and would make a great wood for tabletops, etc. Here's a link (http://www.tropical-wood.com/dillenia.htm) to the description on his website.

Kelly, it looks Grrrrreat!! But you need to get one of those laser guys to etch Hanna's Wood Works into it in small letters!! Jim.

Thanks Jim...I never thought of that. I just mounted it on the grill with two bolts. I am going to fill the holes with a different wood as soon as I get a plug cutter bit. The last one got mounted via epoxy, but it turned loose over time...this one got bolted so it isn't going anywhere.

The dowels will be a lighter wood for a contrasting touch. Any suggestions on what wood would look good?

I'd think something that matches the dark grain in the wood...maybe ebony? I almost added zebra, but I'm afraid it would be too much. I wouldn't do anything to take away from what you already have. Jim.
