View Full Version : Playing with Dye and Firewood #1

I've been practicing trying to get pleasing HFs with some firewood. This is red oak, 4" tall and 5 3/4" wide.

This piece had some cracks, and was pretty boring, so I tried dying it in the manner of Andy DiPietro (although he apparently does sandblasting on a lot of his pieces as well).

Please let me know what you think, and ways to improve -

That is a beautiful piece of wood Cathy, and love the dye job on it, that color really works well!

I think this looks beautiful Cathy. Congratulations.
I really like pieces made with wood that starts off with imperfections. They seem to end up with a sense of integrity that a bought-in blank can never deliver.
How did you get such a deep red colour?

How did you get such a deep red colour?

Simon, first I dyed it black and sanded waaaaay back, and then lots of coats of red (artisan from CSUSA), until it was the color I liked. It looked really orangey at first, but additional coats did the trick.

Well done again Ma'am!! I use the CSUSA red a lot and really like it, also agree with the orange look at the beginning. As before, bottom pics if you would pls? I keep going back to the opening...very well done!

Cathy, this is a winner!!!! Beautifully done, and the color is fantastic! Oak is challenging, but I love the character of it - you did it proud!

Simon, yes CSUSA is Craft Supplies USA based in Utah - good folks.

Cathy - love the form! Very nice work on the color! It can be a lot of work - especially trying to sand everything evenly - but it sure paid off! Thanks for sharing!

That's very nice. I don't usually like the look of oak, but it looks good dressed in red.
