Ash is a beautiful wood. There's another thread going about it right now but I have sort of a different topic on the species.

Would you say Ash is like Maple in there being a hard and a soft category?

Is this a regional thing?

Where I live (Missouri) the Ash is white and hard as a rock (very hard to rip thick stock unless you have a good sharp blade) and it's very heavy.

Yet I've seen the species also in light weight forms. I've always heard this is the Ash from the South Eastern states.

Is this true? If so, I'd assume the stuff I have here (northern hard white ash) would be better for general woodworking than the softer light weight stuff.

But I'm curious what it's like where you live. I'd say it's as heavy as Oak here.
