I haven't posted in quite a while but I do read the postings almost every day. this piece is maple that I turned and then gave it to the artist in the family (my wife ). She does the flowers and them I get it back to start what we call stippling ( the black part ).
That is done by burning one dot at a time with a pyrography tool that has a diamater of about 3/16 inch. This piece took about 6 hours to do the black burning. The piece is finished with rattle can high gloss laquer finish. The piece is 5 1/2 tall and 6 inches wide.
This piece will be going to an auction to help a friend that has terminal cancer. Please let me know what you think of the piece.

Ron, really a very nice job on this! I love the flowers, and the black stippled background really sets them off. I may have preferred a matte finish on the piece as I think it would accentuate the flowers more without the competition of the gloss stippled areas. If you like the idea, it probably is not too late to overcoat with an acrylic matte finish. Others may like the gloss, however.

Good on you for helping your friend - I pray things go as well as can be hoped.

That's beautiful. I agree with JK about the gloss, but there are many who would prefer the shine I'm sure. I hope you'll continue to share these creations... Very inspiring indeed.

Very nice work. I will also agree about the gloss finish but its not a deal breaker. On the next one I would prefer to see more of the natural wood exposed on the lid. Either with a vine/leaf pattern repeated around the edge or maybe some small flowers. The lid, too me, seems to isolated with the dark background. Overall, it looks really good and demostrates talent on both of your parts!

I agree that a matte finish would do better by me but that is just me. Other then that I think it is a great piece for a very good cause.
