I just traded afew things and got 3 Stanley #5 C and one 5 1/2 C hand planes in return. The things I got rid of I had no use for so this may be a lateral move at best. Are these decent planes once tuned up. I can always use a good plane under the bench. Any advice?

Two of the most common planes
Do you have any pictures?

5 1/2 is one of my favorite sizes while the 5 is the most common size..

Assuming they're in good condition they should be excellent additions to your shop. Lately I've been using my #5's a lot. I'm kind of straky with which planes I use so it's been the #5s lately. Give them a proper sharpening and a good tune-up and they'll make you happy.

3 5's is perfect. One with a straight blade for shooting. One with a light canber for surfacing and general use; and one with a heavy camber for scrubing. You are all set.
As for the 5-1/2c... It is useless and will only take up space in your tool chest. Send it to me and I will find a place to put it.

I want to pick up a 5-1/2c at some point, it would make a wonderfil smoother for table tops and other large surfaces.
