Answered an ad on craigslist for chestnut burls. Owner of said burls is an arborist with several logs of chestnut covered with burls and other assorted gems laying about his lot. Several large oak crotches, slabbed 4" thick, a big maple burl "somewhere out here", etc. I hope to become good friends with this man! These are pics of a chestnut burl in progress.

Beautiful wood - great score.

Please tell me, though, that you paid an obscene amount of money for this, just so I (and everyone else) can feel better. :D

Update: Yesterday I finally re-connected with the arborist that owns the burls that I posted about last month. Though not free, as I had hoped, the price was VERY reasonable, especially since he did all of the cutting with his very large and very sharp chainsaw! Counted about 20 pieces in all once I got home. Most are distinct burl caps, but a few are simply chunks of burl from where it had grown completely around the main trunk in a mass. Also some small log sections and a large slab. It is all sealed and ready for storage. Though I didn't even run the saw, my back STILL hurts!
