I was given a burl from Australia, and was not told the type of wood. I made a smaller bowl and gave it to the donor. This is the largest bowl to be made out of the piece. I had a friend try to core the bowl with violent results. It grabbed so bad that it stopped a PM lathe 3 times. I finally told him to stop, I thought something was about to break. I took it home and finished the bowl last night. It is aprox. 8" wide and 3 3/4" tall. It is sanded to 600 grit and has a Deft lacquer finish. Any Ideas on the wood type would help. Thanks in advance. Russell

I can't help you with the wood ID, but sure is some nice wood, almost a leathery grain. Nice job.

that's a pretty bowl. If I had to guess and that's all it would be, I'd say it's Cherry.

You might try posting your query on woodworkforums.com. It is an Aus-based turning forum.

Wild guess would be Red Malee Burl.

Not sure of the wood but a nicely done bowl.

It's a nice looking bowl... Lovely figure and character.

As for the wood, it's almost certainly a eucalyptus variety because most of their trees are in that group. It's little gummy(dark inclusions) which I really like. I'd guess it's figured red gum, but hopefully Peter will weigh in with a real Aussie opinion.
