This wood was very plain when cut (last summer) but has some interesting spalting now. The HF is 10" wide x 7" tall. Wall thickness is just over 1/8" at the opening tapering to 1/4" at the bottom.

Looks good. What did you hollow with? I need to get some kind of hollowing tools...

Nice HF. Where did the spalting come from? Did you treat it? It certainly is an attractive piece.

That spalting sure added some character to this one. Beautiful job on the form - larger than I thought from the pic.

Nicely done Dennis. The wood does have some nice character. What is the finish? The wood looks lighter than the oiled finish that I am using and may be something I need to try to get a lighter product.

David;
I did most of the hollowing with hand held tools but used a captured hollowing rig to clean up the bottom. I like the freedom of hand held tools but this is as big as I do that way.

Dan;
I stored the log sections on end in the shade and put some compost on top. Sweet Gum spalts readily in east Texas.

Thomas;
The finish is lacquer, once it cures I will buff it out some. I like the amber effect of oil on most woods but not on the lighter color woods.

That's gorgeous, Dennis. I love the form and finish, but the spalting is the real star for me. Just lovely.

Everyone has mentioned the great looking spalting, but I can't help but wonder, am I the only one who has not seen brown spalting as extensive as this before?

I like the delicate opening and the form is pleasing. Well done!
