View Full Version : Elm burl

I had the good fortune of getting out a few weeks ago on my tree guy's lot and firing up the old chainsaw... What I found were a bunch of elm burls on trees that were cut last year. Here's a squat little form turned from a piece of the wood. I may have picked the best piece in the lot, but I hope not... I hope all of it looks like this.

It's finished with BLO and WOP. It's about 6 or 7 inches wide and 3 or 4 inches tall.

Comments and criticism welcomed and appreciated.

Boy, there is a lot going on with that elm! Were you concerned with it holding together, or did you wrap the outside while hollowing?

David,
That is a very good use of the the burl you started with. Great form and a well defined shape make this one a winner. Very nice.

David,
This is great - as a new turner I look at some of the work you guys do and wonder if I'll ever get it! Very nice!

David, you sure lucked out on that one!! Very nice piece - loads of character, and the color is fantastic. I hope the rest of the burls look this nice. Congrats on the haul, BTW. Seems like it was fairly dry - don't see a lot of distortion.

Holy crap Keller! How much of this eye candy are you going to post. This is my favorite one so far. Man that's some nice wood and you oriented that beautifully to show it off. Another brilliant piece of work!

Thanks for the comments.

...What street is this guy on?
It's on Grand just north of the downtown square. If we can work it out, I'll get you through the gate on your next trip up.

... Were you concerned with it holding together, or did you wrap the outside while hollowing?

Anytime I've got a tool in my hand, there is concern for the integrity of whatever I'm turning. In this case, it's turned au natural, but the tape would probably have been a good idea.

...Seems like it was fairly dry - don't see a lot of distortion.

It was actually quite dry, but this piece came off of a giant elm stump that had been sitting on his lot for several years. Some of the other stuff is gonna have more moisture in it I'm sure.

... How much of this eye candy are you going to post?...

This is the wood I mentioned in the PM I sent you.

David,

Your choice of wood for this piece and the way you positioned the opening of the form make this a great natural edge hollow form. I really like this one!!!

Great job of orientation for the opening...I like this alot, but am a sucker for anything with a natural edge or inclusion...this piece has a great character to it. Nice, very nice. Hope to see some more of this wood...great gloat on the wood at that!
