View Full Version : What Color or Design should Van Huskey paint his Delta 28-350 Refurb Bandsaw?

Greetings!
Some of you may have read this thread, wherein Van Huskey details the hunt, stalk, and bagging of this wonderful North American big game tool:
Double bandsaw gloat (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?158855-Double-bandsaw-gloat)

181350

I submit to you that no man with 6 band-saws should be permitted, nay FORCED to choose a color for his sixth saw unaided, without help from those interested in his continued acquisitional success. It is clear that his creativity has been burned out by the number of times he has had to make this decision, for Van's thought thus far was "silver". Maybe yes, maybe no... but we should at least help advise him! What color or design should he refurb his saw into, what would YOU do for some excitement if you were painting your sixth band saw?
Post your advice and descriptions as you will, extra points for visual aids!

Oh, Dave, thank you, thank you, thank you...for not making this poll about MY Delta 28-350!!!!!!!! I've already bought the paint...Hammered Aluminum. So, guess which color I voted for... I'm glad I am not the one that is going to get shamed into painting my BS something other than what I had intended. But for Van, it is toooooo late. Now there is a poll. He has no choice. At least I didn't vote pink. Heck, I voted for his original idea. I like it. But if pink wins...;)

Other - while I like the idea of the Shark Mouth - I'd lean more towards Rottie black and tan w/big teeth...

I think he should paint all his bandsaws a different color. I know he has a lot of bandsaws so I'm going to dig deep and suggest prussian blue, van Dyck brown or burnt umber. Possibly he might adorn them with happy little trees and carefree birds.

I' m for the P-51 theme...just sayin'

I have to admit... the silver with nose art is starting to grow on me more now.

Burnt umber and happy birds lol... too much PBS!

Im not sure about the nose art, but adding life to the shop with the 2 tone gray and red stripe seems to be a no-brainer. Put some white text/logo/decals on it and it's set to go...

I vote for a vibrant Kawasaki green....

But I will admit the "Shark's Mouth" sounds good (even though the P40 wore the mouth, not the P51).

Oooo-oooo-oooo! Another idea just came to me.

Look at the blocky top on that big ol' saw. Ya gotta paint it Gumby green with Gumby eyes. The dust collection hose (painted green) can be his waving arm.

:D

I'm not well......

I love the idea of some risque nose art on that old saw, and maybe a few fake bullet holes. Humor in the workshop is a good thing!

Art Deco black with silver graphics, and crystal knobs that hold the doors closed.................Although as usual my bold fashion sense doesn't seem to be supported by common opinion..Sniff....Sniff........................... ...Rod.

If not the nose art, then the standard color. I saw a gun-metal-green Mini Max once; it wasn't pretty.

Don't care about the colors but the pattern should be paisley.

Edit: Just saw the original acquisition post and, based on the era of manufacture, the saw should be painted in a tie-dye pattern.

I think it should be veneered in cherry and maple, with ebony binding on the corners.

If any saw is Gumby it is a PM 141, which especially in the evergreen looks and is referred to as a Gumby. I will prbably bring my 141 back to factory spec though.

That is actually a very cool thought, would have to track them down though Mcmaster Carr doesn't have any.

The bullet holes are another interesting idea, I hadn't thought of. Just as long as none were made by a "golden BB" since I do need it to run.

Although I respect what Colin Chapman did I am too much of a Ferrari F1 fan to consider that, Ferrari red with Schumacher or Lauda's name/number on the saw might be different though, red with a big yellow prancing pony.

Did some work for a guy years ago who owned Lauda's championship 312-T2.

Horrible paint job if you looked at it up close. But the mechanicals were beautiful. Front anti-roll bar was about the size of a pencil, with lever arms splined on the ends. And the rear axle carriers were built with the air scoops for the brake calipers as part of the structure. And the flat 12 with the velocity stacks was gorgeous.

So if you really want it authentic, make sure it's got a lot of orange peel in the finish ;-)

That would be the '77 win, his '75 championship was in the 312T. He lost the '76 championship to Hunt by only a point in crazy wet Japanese GP, even though he missed 2 races after literally almost burning to death in the crash at the German GP. The '77 win was decisive even though he left Ferrari (fed up with Enzo) with two races left in the season. That is a gorgeour car. One more championship for the T312 type cars and into the dark ages until Ferrari was resurrected by Jean Todt, Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher in the late 90s.

I don't think it would be quite right to paint the Delta Ferrari red, it would make more sense to pain my Minimax red. I don't see covering the powder coat of a pristine saw but maybe one day a yellow or black "Cavallino Rampante" on the side of it.

I wanted to add what a longer term idea with the bomber theme was/is. Beaver made (and then several successors that bought the company through the years) made the 2300 12" bandsaw http://s992.photobucket.com/albums/af47/Brookwoodbass/Old%20Power%20Tools/?action=view&current=Beaverband3.jpg&newest=1#!oZZ7QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs992.photobu cket.com%2Falbums%2Faf47%2FBrookwoodbass%2FOld%252 0Power%2520Tools%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DBe averband1.jpg%26newest%3D1

The cool thing about it is the wheels are solid disc aluminum and have no guard over the smooth part. I was thinking about painted the wheels with the "hypnosis" disc pattern you see on WWII era fighters and basically painting it up like a fighter so it could escort my Delta "bomber". I know some see it as blasphemy not to paint these machines back to original colors but remember it is just a coat of paint and the Delta will be far more loved than it ever was in a high school getting brush painted. I see it as a chance to bring some levity, interest and maybe some beauty to some worn machines.

Was the original color of the Delta gray?

I know all these other ideas are interesting but my first thought was what was the original color?

It was/is the medium dark Delta gray. Everything that a brush couldn't touch with the doors closed is still the original paint, you, see below. The saw must have been close to the wall because the back of the spine is still original.

If anyone cares the two B-17s that I will base the scheme off of will either be:

Miss Angela which is still air worthy 34th bomb group: http://www.johnweeks.com/b17active/b17missangela.html

I'm not 100% sure of this, Van (and I have no time right now to google it), but I believe the hypnosis pattern was only used on the nosecones of Luftwaffe aircraft during WWII. In my mind, I'm seeing it on an FW190, but there could be others. Would be quite strange to have an Allied bomber escorted by an Axis fighter, but times have changed! ;)

You wouldn't be the first (or the second) to paint a 28-350 pink:

or:

But I recommend go either with the shark mouth or good old Delta gray. Delta used all different shades, mine was color-matched to the original:

Hmm, never bothered to check, just assumed they were on Allied planes as well, maybe not. Guess I could paint it up like Ta-152H and figure out how to use nitrous oxide on a bandsaw. 20 inches of Ipe, no problem hit the red button. Well the B-17s I am thinking about were sharing the air with the FWs...

You wouldn't be the first (or the second) to paint a 28-350 pink:

Actually the original genesis of the idea to do an "art" piece came from the "big pink bandsaw" in the video you linked. The more I looked at the 28-350s the more interesting the shape became and the more things it reminded me of. Then it sort of hit me that some ways I looked at it the lines reminded me of the control surfaces of a plane, the spine in particular looks like a rudder. The I saw it in silver in my head and it morphed.

Well it appears the votes have trailed off and we seem to have a winner, unless there is another onslaught of voting. If it remains the same I have a pretty clear idea what I will be doing, and she will be painted in the Dark Angel B-17 scheme.

I need to incorporate the nose art, USAF rondel, the group triangle and plane number. I will probably add some OD green as another homage to the plane.

Ok... I'm new around here, so take this for what it's worth... I voted "other" and my concept is this. How about doing it "X-Ray" or transparent style. In other words, paint the a picture of the "guts" on the outside. Remember Slim Goodbody, rockin' the anatomy body suit? That's what I'm talking about!

Douglas Clark
02-12-2011, 4:51 AM
Wait, wait, wait... I just had an even better idea building on my previous one. You could do a spoof on the "X-ray" idea and instead of painting the actual interior, you could paint a hamster wheel on it. Powered by hamster. Or maybe, if you are into "rat rods" Rat Fink running on a hamster wheel. :D

Riiiiight. The 'Ring. Forgot about that. Somehow always wanted to go there for "open field day". You "run what you brung". Would drive like a weenie, no doubt - but what a famous course - for good, and expecially for bad reasons - which is why they don't run there any more.

I don't know how but as soon as I read Prussian blue I knew this was going to be a Bob Ross reference and I loved it.

Befitting the era of the machine, I would go matte black with some subtle pinstriping. Lots of blank canvas there.
