Dang wood pecker decided he needed to work on this particular ash tree until he ringed it and killed it. The bark had a high number of randomly placed holes in it as well as the bark being completed removed around the tree. The tree fought hard and in the end lost; but the wood sure has some interesting colors from the long battle. Small HF Ash with a one eyed happy face showed up. 2.75 x 5.25 MAO and buffed.

Nice work, Dan! Focus is a little rough on the pics, but appears to be a neat piece of wood, too. I wonder if it was the ash borers under the bark that the woodpecker was after??

It is hard to imagine that vase in the chunk of wood on the lathe. Good job releasing the piece hidden there.

Really like the form you were able to get out of that piece. The natural colorings are really special.

Nice form and very interesting wood. I"m with John, I'll bet that the tree was infested and the bugs killed it, the woodpecker was just attracted to it for the easy pickin's.

Remind me to not let you prune my trees!

That vase is going to look GREAT with some flowers in it. Sorry your tree died - ash is a pretty one. But you made the most of it with a nice souvenir.

Did you end up turning it green? I turned some green mountain ash a while back. It cut like a dream and took detail well, but I could not get it to stabilize. Ended up doing some little bowls and let them deform. I did not have any problems with cracking.

Edit: Oops, I see that you answered that the wood was dry when turned.

Never thought of ash as having that much character, but this piece is great. Very nice form and finish also. Nicely done, Dan.

As mentioned, woodpeckers go after insects in the tree. They don't keep pecking holes around trees that don't have lunch in them. The insects are most likely what really killed the tree -- especially since there are at least three species of critters infecting ash trees these days. Nice vase though.
