Finally got to turn something again, roughed out a platter from one half and this bowl from the other. Tomorrow will have to try out the new vac system on something dry. http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l279/T-Caster/P1030542.jpg

Dan, that crotch figure is outstanding!! This is going to be a nice bowl, and I hope the platter has the feather in it as well.

Dan, great looking grain. Is it the camera angle, or is it really that oval? How well does elm turn?

The chatoyance will really show once you/ve finished your bowel. Will be interesting to see it when it is done. Good looking bowl. Enjoy your vacuum, hope it works out well for you.

Thanks to all for the kind comments.

John---Yup, the platter has the same figure, the piece was thinner so had to go flatter (hey ,that rhymes with platter!).

Fred---Just camera angle, though elm tends to move a lot as it dries, so will be pretty oval when it dries. The most notable characteristic of green elm is, well, it stinks...literally. Other than that, it turns pretty well wet, is pretty hard when dry. It has a nice color, fairly open grain, sort of similar to oak or ash. The crotches tend to be very nice with great figure.

Very pretty feather. That will be nice. Dimensions?

Really nice looking grain. I too am interested in the dimensions, especially if it is fairly wet and going to distort. I am starting to think that 10% wall is not always enough, but have had some checking with thicker.

That looks like it's almost alive! My mind and eye are playing tricks on me. I keep seeing a small raised bead at the inside edge of the rim. This looks awesome as is. I would be tempted to just clean it up and finish it after it dries and otherwise just let it be.

It's going to be a beautiful bowl... I spent a little time with some pretty elm today, and I'll get some photos up when it's finished. I'm looking forward to seeing this bowl of yours in its final state.

The feather on the inside looks like a turtle shell. I wonder if the shape will be right on the bottom of the bowl to look like a turtle when the bowl is flipped over?

Thanks for the comments. It's 12" x about 3 1/2". David, I see what you see in the pic, but I think that's just where I rounded the edge to prevent cracking. I guess it's what Grumbine would call a "dumpy bottom bowl", but I wanted to preserve as much of the feather as possible.
