I have a bunch of slatwall on my garage walls. I also have a bunch of hooks for pegboard that I have hanging around. They seem to fit the spacing, but don't have the support from the lower slat, just hang from the upper.

Can pegboard hooks hold securely in slatwall?

Not that it would matter - the answer would still be, "not a good idea", but are you sure they are slate and not fiberglass or asbestos sheets ?
Alot of older house with garages used asbestos sheets (about 2x3'ish) as fire proofing.

No, this is recently installed commercial plastic slatwall (like you see in department stores), attached by masonry screws to the cinderblock walls, or into studs in drywall, depending on the wall.
