It is hard to pass up a pile of wood when driving down the street, but a car makes it easier. I had to go back with my truck to get this. I really don't need any more wood (as you can see by the pile behind), but I think if you pass it up, more will not always be there, and some of this will be going to local club members. Yesterday and today I roughed out 7 bowls, 10 to 12" D and have sealed and hope to get some spalting. The green wood turns like butter, but bark does dull the tool.

Thomas,

I just cut a dead fall hackberry a couple of weeks ago, it has the most remarkable spalting in it. I have pics on my cell phone, will try to get them on the PC and post them when I get off work today.

I had some fun with the hackberry I had, turned real well for me. I wonder if it would be good wood for pyrography or dying.

This Hackberry did not have any spalting when found, but I am hoping it will come. I have roughed out 7 of the 10 to 12" D, coated with Anchor seal, and have them in plastic bags and plan to sswap bags every 2 or 3 days. The slab sections (actually splits and pith cut) will be cut into small blanks about 5"D x 3"T without pith to take to local turning club for a "Learn to Turn" session in April to use for practice wood. There is one log section about 8" D x 12" L that I hope to do a hollow form later, and some other wood sections to dry for end grain boxes down the road. I need to come up with some different shapes than the conventional bowl, and I don't do carving or burning, but there is no need to get in a hurry.

I know, I know, it took me a while but here is a pic of spalted dead fall hackberry that I cut. Dollar bill for size reference only... it wasn't in the tree, darn it.181593
