I don't turn bowls very often but I am pretty happy with this one. Late last spring one of the local towns took down 16 ash trees and our turning club was fortunate enough to get all of them. I picked up a chunk of one around the end of November and roughed out a couple bowls (which produced 3 large bags of shavings!). I put them in my homemade dry kiln for about 4 weeks and then they sat for another week or 2 waiting for me to get to them. I finish turned this one last Sunday and turning it upside down on a flat surface today I only have about a 1/16" of rock in it. It's a tad under 13" and about 3 1/2" high with 4 coats of satin wipe on poly. And it's already sold! I still need to sign it though.

Still working on taking good pics. I need to get a photo tent setup.

That is a very nice bowl! I like the contrast of the sap wood with the heartwood. Ash is great to turn!

Simple, clean, elegant, not to mention some great looking wood. Nice work - that one should serve well in its new home for decades. I've got a 24" mountain ash round that I have had sitting around for almost 2 years. Might just have to break out the chainsaw and hollowing rig this weekend. Wonder if the wood will look as good as yours....

Nice looking bowl. I assume it is black ash by the color contrast of the heart and sap wood. I like ash because it has a look of oak with the grain, but it isnt near as porous. You can actually stain white ash with oak stain and it looks just like oak.

I have worked with ash a little and find it challenging to sand given the density differences between summer and winter growth rings. Did you encounter this and what was your solution?

Great bowl. Really like you oriented the grain and you used the sapwood to good advantage.

Hi Skott, I did end up with some slight differences between the different growth rings but not too bad. But no tricks really just power sanded it. And thanks everyone else for your kind comments.

That really turned out beautiful. I have never turned ash, but it has long been one of my favorite woods. I have made several using ash. I love to work with it.
