I saw a Nova 3000 with an after market speed control for $1,000. It has a homemade wooden stand and a titan chuck. Is this a good price? Thanks, Robert

What horsepower is the motor? It looks bigger than the original. $1000 is a lot of money for a used lathe but the chuck is worth at least $200 to $250 if you have to buy a new one. Quality previously owned lathes come up seldom (at least where I live). You could wait till Woodcraft puts the 1624-44 on sale for about $900 but then you would have no VS and have a long wait at least to catch it on sale. A new lathe with VS and 16" swing you are probably talking about double the money.

I'd say go for it if its in good shape - but try to talk him down some.

I have used a 3000 for 20 yrs..it's a tough machine. I use it with the outboard accessory for bowls, so I can sit while i turn. Don't know who make the speed controller, so I can't comment there...All I know is that the things are built like tanks.

To me that looks like a 3000 with the Leeson variable speed DC motor. That came in at 1HP though maybe there was a 1.5HP option too if I remember correctly. I've turned on one of those. My local woodcraft uses those, among others, for their woodturning classes. Students beat the living daylights out of them and they've never had a problem.

That is overall a very good lathe that could last most for A long time. I would offer him say $750 and see what happens. I would personally love to have a Titan chuck which is an excellent unit. Just ask all he can say is no.

i have that identical lathe
csusa had a package deal upgrade on the lesson motor and dc variable speed control
if you look and price the motor it alone is worth almost 700 no to mention the price of the speed control.
great deal go for it
and with the chuck to boot
