Hi Folks,
I picked up a wood threading system a while back. It was comprised of a 1" tap and, of course, a 1" die unit. I made a 9" long screw, a matching tapped board and a "lock nut" (It was for the rocking horse if you recall).

However, typical of the instructions that come with this kind of tool, they said, "Some woods require several MINUTES of soaking in Linseed oil or whatever and others require several DAYS"! I was using Red Oak and soaked the 1" turned rod for about three hours. :(

The threads turned out to be OK ( :( ) and worked fine. However, I have seen "cleaner" ACME threads in my long life. Does anyone have any idea of what "soak time" for various woods REALLY means? I'm sure that soaking pine for "several days" would turn it into oatmeal for the grandkids! heh heh ;) :) HMMMM - Forget it, I'm off to "soak" some Pine before the weekend!! ;) :) :)
