Here is a small vase I turned out of Maple Burl. Mike Smith threw this piece in to see what I could do with it. It is 5" high with the pedestal and 3 1/2" across. Sanded to 400 grit and finished with rattle can lacquer. Walnut base dyed with india ink.

Looks part vase, part goblet - vablet?? The natural edge is dramatic, and the pedestal is well proportioned to the piece allowing the maple burl form to be the center of attention. Good looking form!

Bernie, I would say you did very well with it!! I really like the NE of the burl, and the pedestal is sized well for the form. Nice work!

Thanks for the kind comments. I wasn't sure what to do with it when I got it. I looked at it for several months then decided to make a NE vase. I definitely would like to get a bigger piece of maple burl. I guess it could be a goblet but pretty hard to drink from it.:D

Bernie - this is really cool! Good looking wood but the real star is the natural edge! Great idea to showcase it!

Thanks again. I am hoping to stop in on the way back east this year and see Mike. Hopefully he will have some Claro walnut and some maple burl when I get there. I told him to save me some. Didn't want Keeton to be me to the punch.

Cool piece Bernie! Love the ne and the simple pedestal really draws the eye to the maple burl. Better drive fast, I don't think John will waste much time in his search for more wood...Bill...

Very nice Bernie. Really good form, and the base looks like ebony, good job with the dye. I think Ernest Bourgnine may be able to use it as a goblet though, look ma no hands!:D

If you are going to do that with free wood--next time next time I will have to charge you double free. Nicely done.
