This one is going in the Florida State Fair in a couple weeks. I just have a few more coats of finish to go. I posted few pics of it over in the turners forum as they had given me advise on turning the knobs.

I thought I would post it in here as I spend most of my time in here and the majority of the work in this piece is with hand tools...

The Table is Cherry and QS Sycamore, with Maple secondary wood, and Cocobolo Knobs.

I am pleased with the result, hopefully it will hold up in the competition.

Looks great! I'm sure your work will hold up against the others. The contrast between sycamore and cherry is a nice look. Good luck!

That's a nice piece, the knobs are really attractive. Most importantly, it's a great piece of furniture. You can never have enough drawer and table top surface space.

Interesting detail on the legs too. Was that your original design or was it born of a mistake? I ask because some of my best "design ideas" are neither designs nor ideas, but patterns or shapes that just kind of show up from free handing or from mistakes.

I love the drawer configuration, it reminds me of Shaker Art, I am a fan of Shaker design, it goes with anything.

Very nice, I like the way the wood in the drawers is all from one piece or at least looks like it is.

Good luck with the competition.

Add another chime in for the QS sycamore - looks great. The whole thing looks good to me, it is tidy but does not go so far as to look like it imitates machine made. And very functional - you can never have too many drawers.

One of the leg blanks had a crack in it and once cut and tapered a little inside corner popped off. I considered gluing the corner back on, then i decided to grab the block plane, clean up the corner, and treat all the other legs in the same manner... you could say I let the material dictate the design.

Thats what I was going for. The board the drawer fronts came from was 5" wide and quite long. I chose the nicest 6 feet and cut it in half and flipped one piece to match the dark streaks together, I think it makes it look like it was one wide board.

Harry
I definitely took Inspiration from the shaker ascetic, though I did take some liberty's with the design.

One of my favorite parts of the piece is that the drawer bottoms are solid maple, and the bottom side I left with scrub ridges, just another texture and throwback to the "good old days"

+1 to what everone else has said. Nice wood selection, nice proportions, nice joinery.
Good luck at the fair, you should do well.

Ah. I figured it was something like that. I left material defects off my list of where deviations come from. You pulled it off nicely.

"you could say I let the material dictate the design."

To me that is the sign of true old time Craftsmanship. Good Call and BEAUTIFUL WORK.

Looks fantastic!!
Those feet seem a bit clunky and out of proportion, though.

Yup those feet were a gift from a fellow woodworkers scraps that made their way to last Thursdays woodworking meeting. After they do their job catching drips, they will have to be made into something nice.

Beautiful all around.
I don't see sycamore used much. It looks great on those drawer fronts.

I have to drop my two pieces off at the fairgrounds on the 4th or 5th... most likely on the 4th as soon as I can.

Judging is on the 6th, so I should find out how I did then.

Here is a pic of the other piece I am intering.

Great work Andrew!!! I think you will do extremely well in the competition, lots of very well done craftsmanship! I think it is a much more stunning entry than the one that you had concerns about.

I assume that's a gun cabinet? Looks great, frameless construction?

Yup. It could easily be turned into a display cabinet, but It was designed as a gun cabinet.

Better make sure you have some nice looking guns to put in that thing. Great job!

I built it because I was tired of seeing my Great Grandfathers 1892 marlin sitting in the back of the closet. I put my mark on the marlin when I made a replacement stock for it... The origional stock was broken at some point along it's life. Its missing most of the magazine parts and the firing chamber is in pretty rough shape, but it is a family heirloom. at some point I plan to find a good cold blue and reblue it.
