View Full Version : My Dad - A Request

My dad is very ill. He is in the ICU with blood clots in both lungs. He is in a very small town hospital and we basically won't know anything until Monday, which by the way is very frustrating. Because of the blood thinners he has many areas of bruising and he looks just pitiful in that hospital bed. He has some other medical issues that I can't discuss at this point because all family members aren't aware of them.

For those who followed the summer's trials and tribulations of my relationship with my parents - I'm so glad I patched things up (as best I could).

When you pray please send one up for him. Thanks.

You and your family will be in my prayers and thoughts. I don't know you, but do know the struggle and sadness that can come from illness in the family. Hang in there, I hope brighter days are ahead.

Belinda, my prayers offered also. Glad you were spurred on to work on the relationship last summer. Sometimes we just never know why His voice inside us tells us we need to do these things....Jim.

Thank you all so much! Dad and I appreciate your prayers and support. We're going to get him transferred to Savannah tomorrow, one way or another, and take things from there. I'm really scared, he's really sick and scared. Thanks again!

Thanks again, all. Thoughts and prayers MUCH appreciated. After a whole lot of discussing, arguing, and threatening yesterday we finally got my dad transferred to a hospital in Savannah. He got here around 12 or so last night. His doctor here is a critical care specialist and pulmonologist. Thank goodness! My mom and I got to bed around 2. Long day, but worth it.

I know you're glad he's there Belinda. He's in good hands, all the way around. Just keep giving him your love and support and let him know how much he means to you. In times like this, that can help more than medicine, I think.

Keep us posted, more prayers going out!

Here's the latest. Continued prayers requested. We're out of the woods in some respects. Daddy is doing much better now that he is in a larger hospital with the capabilities and physicians to treat his problems.

He is off oxygen. He has a large clot in each lung and the clots are blocking the majority of the blood flow to about 2/3 of his lungs. He will be on blood thinners for 9 to 12 months and it will take around 3 months for the clots to dissolve. With respect to his lung issues he will be in the hospital for about another week or until his bleeding times are up to a therapeutic level.

Incidentally found on a CT scan are two other issues. He has an enlarged gallbladder with a stone blocking the outlet from the gallbladder. He also has a very enlarged right kidney, enlarged by either a cyst or a stone blocking the ureter. Further testing is being done this morning to evaluate the gallbladder and to determine what exactly is causing the enlargement of the kidney. Both of these issues will need to be addressed, but can't be with the amount of blood thinners he is currently receiving.

He and my mom are both in better spirits and resting better since he is in hospital five minutes away from my house. My mom still stayed with him last night for her own peace of mind. She did have a cot for sleeping so she was much more comfortable. I believe she is going home today to take care of some things and I will be staying with my dad tonight.

Just a funny to lighten the mood . . . last night around midnight the nurse came in to check on my dad. She apparently didn't realize my mom was asleep on the cot beside the bed. My mom was so exhausted she was sleeping really soundly. The nurse made some noise, my mom jumped up and screamed, which scared the nurse who screamed in turn. Apparently it took a moment for everyone to get a handle on the situation!

Thanks again for your concern and your support.

All, thanks again. Since some of you have asked, here's an update. Blood clots are still present but hopefully getting smaller, he hasn't had any follow up testing as of yet. He is scheduled to see the kidney doc on the 4th of March and we'll know more then about what the treatment will be for that. For some strange reason my mother has decided she needs to take over driving - which has irritated my dad quite a bit. I think she needs to drive more, but he is certainly capable of driving. This was an eye opener for all of us as to how quickly things can go horribly wrong. Thanks again for your concern and your prayers.
