I have a few small ash log sections, only three inches or so in diameter. I cannot recall, for the life of me, where I got them. In fact, if anyone sent them to me please jog my memory! Anyway, I turned this cup from a piece of one just for the heck of it. Booooring! So out came the dyes once again. I did a pretty good red to yellow sunburst but it was still boring. So I kept playing with it and ended up with this which is a pretty color but still boring! But by that time I had messed with it so much I figured I might as well finish it. Especially since it totally breaks the "avoid the pith" rule (the pith runs right through the middle) and it didn't crack! Plus, it gave me an excuse to play with my new Paasche air brush which arrived a couple of days ago. Sure is nicer than that el cheapo bargain bin brush I've been using!

Very elegant form David. I think it shows a delicate touch in turning also......a skill set I am sure is a must for the finials and pedestals you do. It is tall, but a very nice work. I like the shading that fades up from the bottom of the goblet section..........that is quite a pedestal, [stem] Nice of you to show the effects of airbrushing.......thanks!

Beautiful piece. Nice proportions of the stem and cup. I think we will be privileged to see some good air brush techniques.

It looks good, David, and it's a site more interesting that a plain piece of ash. The part I find the most interesting is the stem... The slender element is reversed from what is typically done, and my eyes keep coming back to it. I'll be looking at this piece some more.

Thanx everyone for looking and commenting. And a special thanx to Cathy S. for reminding me (smacks self in head!) that it was she who sent me the ash logs...

David, this is very nice indeed. The reverse pedestal is a little different but looks great to me. Long and elegant. I would encourage a series of cups utilizing this pedestal design. Everything is fantastic and the only, very very minor, adjustment to the next one ...might be a stronger taper at the bottom of the cup portion. Very cool.

Elegant for sure. It is the first thing that came to my mind and looks like many others. Many synonyms for elegant would work quite well also. Beautiful shape and detail. I think the piece has a less is more vibe for me that makes it stately and lets it be comfortable in it's height. And the color is beautiful. Very well done David.

I think it is gosh darn elegant. I'd "freek" trying to turn that tall, slender stem. Congrats to you on that! I can't see the ash in the thumbnail, but the color is quite interesting. I think it's a winner

Very, very nice David. Just curious on your method, did you use any kind of small steady other then your hand when turning the stem?

"...did you use any kind of small steady..."

No steady. It was "interesting" (sic "nerve wracking") but the hardest part was to get a continuous curve from top to bottom. I was afraid it would end up looking like a little baseball bat!

Thanx to all for looking and commenting.
