I have fished and boated north ga and the fla panhandle for many years. Been with wellcraft, proline, and quatchita. I now want to build a boat.Since 1986 I have supported my family as a cabinetmaker. I own a small company. I look on the net and see pictures of a caribiana skiff and become infatuated with the idea of building a boat. Atkins has plans for the Sallie Hyde, I have looked at the poulsbo boat, and the nez perce. Do cabinet making skills translate to building a less than 23' wooden motorized slow moving fishing, open deck type boat?

Some of them, because it's all woodworking. But boats are all about fair curves and angled joints, marine ply and fiberglas, water proof glues/resins and stainless or brass hardware. So some of it is similar - but I'd say it's more like building fine furniture for outdoor use.

Of course are you wanting to build a boat the old traditional way, or do you want to build a "stitch and glue" plywood boat?

Ask this question at www.woodenboat.com. Log on to their forums. Pick one and you'll get info. Maybe someones built sally Hyde although I don't recall hearing the name. It's a great looking boat. There are a number of hardy looking working boats around. If you can make a living cabinet making you can build that boat. Plans may require lofting. I'm building a little boat now. I need a year staring at the plans before I start.

I built a Phantom 18 from http://www.bateau.com Not sure what you may be looking for i a boat, but I can attest to the fact that you will not find a better bunch of people to buy form, and the folks on the forum are more then ready to answer any questions. The designer of the boats is on the forum all the time and can answer any technical question you may have. I ordered plans and the searched all over for materials. What I found was that I could not beat their price on materials either. They got all of my money.

Good luck.

You might want to look at Glen-L Marine's website. http://www.glen-l.com/kits/kit-body.html They have all kinds of plans for all types of boats. No lofting necessary.

I built their 17' Whitehall, I modified it and now it is 21' long and 54" beam. Only weights about 150 Lbs. With seats and floor boards installed. Rows easy and is fast.

Here are my pics of the boat building process. It is cedar strip and epoxy.

See the album "Whitehall the beginning" there are several other albums about the process and then the finished shots.

Also an 11' Nesting Dinghy from Bateau.com, it is stitch and glue over, I just used cheap mahogany ply wood from the lumber yard. Just going to be a yacht tender from the Sailboat to the shore and back.
