Another bowl from a board project.

This one started out to be one and a half layers taller, but a catch blew off the top layer, and took a chunk out of the next layer. I trimmed it back to good wood and finished it anyway.

It is Maple and Cherry, finished with WOP.

It is about 2-5/8 in tall and 7 in wide, wall thickness is .125 at the rim.

Kind of a different take on the Maple/Cherry combination like the "Fade bowl" by John Beaver.

Tennis ball added for scale.

Interesting visual effect, Chris! The maple and cherry do very well together, and the form is good, too.

Wow, amazing job, that looks just like a tennis ball. How'd you get it to look fuzzy???:D Beautiful bowl. The cherry and maple do indeed go well together.

Chris;
I really like the design. Did you come up with it or is it a plan you picked up? Really nice.

Very nice, Chris. I especially like the shapes made by the face grain pieces.

I got my idea from Malcom Tibbetts' work. He does beautiful work.

Nice bowl!

What method did you use to make your blank?

I glued up 3/4 x 3/4 strips of alternating Maple/Cherry to make a board. Then I cut bowl segments, a la Malcom Tibbetts and his "Bowl from a board" concept.

When I glued up the bowl layers, I flipped every other layer to alternate the colors. The tricky part is getting the segment lines to match up with each layer. My center line was off-center a little, so that really cut down the final wall thickness was diminished. The wall thickness for the last couple of layers went from about .125 down to about .070. That is why the top later blew off.

Really nice looking bowl, Chris. The color contrast really adds to the overall look.

I like the design, I have been meaning to try the bowl from a board. Just never seem to finish the list of projects.
