Does anyone know of any good web links or other resources for making folding pocket knifes? I found a couple of sites but am still looking for some that have some example patterns showing different locking mechanisms.

I have made several knives in the past, but have never attempted a folding knife. Anyone have any pointers to offer?

Thanks,

-Jeff

I've made a couple of kits knives from www.knifekits.com and given them away as gifts. Darrell Ralph's folding designs are pretty nice, and not too expensive for what you get. No affiliation, just a happy customer -- their offerings are pretty diverse and they have a good support forum. If you're looking to do everything "from scratch," starting with a couple of kits might be a good way to study different locking mechanisms.

There are books on the subject. I never have had a folding knife book. What I do is make drawings of the knife accurately, and make a copy. Then,I cut out the blade from another sheet of paper, and hinge it onto the drawing with a straight pin. Then,I can swing the blade through its motion, and see of it clears the other parts,if the locking mechanism and its spring works, etc. Has worked fine for me.

When you take some commercial folders apart,it might surprise you as to how BAD the parts are ground way too much for clearance. I took apart a Hubertus(sp?),not a cheap knife at all. The only thing that keeps the blade from going open way farther than it should is that it bears on the end of the back spring. Can't describe it,but it is VERY sloppy inside.

Somewhere in my shop is a spring from a pocket knife I was making. It flew off my fitting board and I've never found it again! This thread got me thinking that I need to give it another try. :)

Here (http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php?1054-Couple-of-slip-joint-WIP&highlight=slip+joint+tutorial) is an outstanding slip joint tutorial by Ryan Minchew posted on Knife Dogs. You'll need to register to be able to see the pics, and it's absolutely worth it. There are some outstanding knife makers on that forum
