Don't post often, but i's like to share my latest addition.

Wanted to get myself a good plane for a while now and what better way then to build it yourself. Walnut main body, padoek sides and bottom. A recycled japanese blade for cutter. Size like a jack, but used mainly for smooting.

A very tight mouth.

First test shavings.

Put some oil on it, waxed the sole.

There's a new 60mm x 6mm blade on it's way for a jointer ;)

Looks to do an excellent job and is quite pleasing to my eye. as long as it is comfortable to push around I would say it's a winner.

Looks like a race car for sure? I'm thinking 1930's Bugatti. Great looker, and worker as well.

Very nice! Shop made planes are so nice to look at, and using them is even nicer. My next one is a jointer too.

Lovely plane. A question for you (or other makers): when you work on the mouth, do you have any tricks to keep the walnut from chipping out? I've recently had a bad experience with this. Thanks!

This is great. My interest in Krenov style planes is peaking. I have a nice piece of Orange Osage in there waiting for my first plane. I hope to start on it pretty soon.

I like yours. What did you finish it with? I was under the assumption that a finish was not applied to these...?

Great looking. But I gotta warn you, building planes can be addicting.

That is a beauty. I also feel like you need to add fenders and wheels.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.

Who said a plane couldn't look speedy :D

Now the mouth is padouk on the outside so no probs with the walnut. I used a piece of 4mm ply to which i stuck some sandpaper to open the mouth. Only apply pressure on the in-stroke though, that will limit any wood being torn away.

I finished it with tung oil. In the past wooden planes got finished or soaked with linseed oil.

If this is your first hand plane build, you have a fine start to many more. I have yet to make my first, but this looks like it can get addictive.

That's a keeper.

Suggestion is to get your self a piece of lignum vietae and use a thin ( 3/8ths ) sole. Paduk is a little too soft I think. Steve Knight uses IPE and that works well as well as his purple heart ones. The lignum is a bit pricey but if you only use it for soles, it lasts quite a few planes for a couple of board feet.

It sure looks neat !
