We've got a microplane that we use for cheese all the time. The first time I saw them at Woodcraft I thought it was funny that the cooking gadget company also made woodworking tools. :)

I've got several in the kitchen. If you find them at places like TJ Maxx and Marshall's, they are cheaper than from woodworking stores.

The cook or #1 are usually responsible for missing tools. I've learned to leave tools rated as disposable on the bench--you know the ones: dollar bin plastic handle chisels, sidecutters that have bitten a live wire, screwdrivers that can't drive! When I can't find something, I know where to look first.

The first Microplane that I bought was for the kitchen, coarse and fine. Zesting lemons has never been easier. It works well on frest ginger and hard cheeses too.
