I received a great box in the mail last week and couldn't wait to get at it since I had seen some of it turned by the benefactor!:D
Really really curly maple, turned reverse grain (don't ask why) sanded to 600 and 1 coat of WOP. 9 1/2" acroos which was kinda fun because I have a 1014:cool:

Thanks you sir!!:D

Jim, I would have to say you did right by that piece!!! Very well done, and it really accentuates the figure quite nicely. Kind of pushed the limit on that 1014, didn't ya!

Very nice work with a very nice piece of curly maple. Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean when you say "turned reverse grain", and I promise not to ask why.

That is a nice looking platter...very nice. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what Reverse Grain is...can't wait to find out!

Normally, a bowl/platter would be turned with the mouth or wide side from the inner portion of the log and the foot being at the bark side. I reversed it so the grain runs the other direction just because the grain in this really is amazing and it really showed it off...if only we had curl-vision in SMC!

We don't really need "curly vision" when the grain looks like that. It is a fine looking specemin, and good photos.

Morning here Jim,

No surprise for me I cut across the grain nearly always for my pens with outstanding results but I think you will agree it is not always for the fainthearted end grain all the way.

Regards Peter.

Beautiful platter Jim. I am definitely going to have to put one of these on my "to turn" list. Keep up the inspirational work. Kieran

Very nice platter Jim! I really like the soft edges and simple form - really allows the wood that grab all the attention! Very nice!
