View Full Version : Add you local (or not so local) woodworking store to the list

I travel a lot and find myself in different locales with a morning or afternoon to waste and love nothing more than going to a woodworking store. Often I am at a loss to find a decent one, Rockler and Woodcraft stores abound in more populated areas but frankly if you have seen one you have kinda seen them all. I love to visit the independent shops but often I am at a loss, the yellow pages and google searches have more often than not sent me on 30-45 minute drives to find lumber yards with an assortment of low dollar hardware and 20 year old tool and tooling stock with an inch of dust on them everywhere except the price sticker which the store has dutifully "upgraded" through the years to keep prices current. I thought I would start a list where people can add their local shops or ones not so local that they have visited and like. Don't be concerned about adding a smaller shop since many areas don't even have a shop but you might want to mention that in the description that someone with a Grizzly showroom in their hometown might not be wowed by the machine selection etc. Sometimes the small but intimate shops are very cool. I am going to lay out a format with one of my favorite not so local shops but feel free to go free form as long as the basic info is there.

1. Locale, I suggest you use the closest decent size city that is close so that people will recognize the area
2. Name of the store and address
3. Phone
4. website if they have one
5. hours if you know them
6. any details you would like to add.

I suggest making the major locale letters larger so people can scan the thread if it ever gets big enough to be a reference.

This is a great store it has been around about 30 years but feels more like a store that has been around for 50+. Not at all a machine showroom kinda place but has an excellent selection of most everything else. Lots of handtools including LN and lots of the Sheffield Clico names like Clifton. Full Festool line, lots of finishing supplies and certainly the Woodslicer bandsaw blades, lots of turning tools as well. This is a shop you can spend some time in upstairs and down. Plenty of savvy staff. Note when you are driving there it is situated in a nice Atlanta neighborhood so don't think your directions or GPS is steering you wrong if you are used to woodworking stores being in more commercial areas!

This store is very straightforward to get to, between Peachtree Industrial Blvd and I-85. They have a wide selection of supplies, blades, clamps, dust collection parts, t-track, hardware, finishing supplies and tools. The major machines are represented, but don't expect a sea of heavy iron. They do however have representatives on the floor, like the Unisaw and the Bosch glider. Very helpful staff.

These are the first that come to mind. All are good "cruizers"

A and N hardware, North KCMO. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/a-and-n-hardware-north-kansas-city)
This is the best hardware store north of the river, they have just about everything you can think of, even bits for Yankee screw drivers. Very small but crammed with stuff. Will take an hour or two to tour. Friendly folks.

Strasser hardware (http://www.yelp.com/biz/strasser-true-value-kansas-city)
A BIG, old, hardware store for the trades and the public, with everything you can imagine and helpful staff. Another good afternoon killer.

Schutte Lumber Co. (http://www.schuttelumber.com/)
In Business since 1880, big lumber room selection, fair tool displays. Good for maybe an hour. just down the street from Strasser.

Overland Tool (http://kansascity.citysearch.com/profile/4170901/lenexa_ks/overland_tool_machinery.html)
Another BIG tool store, good for most the afternoon. Friendly folks.

Literally about 500 yards from my house, but the railway line in between means a whole 2 mile drive to get there. Very good selection of hardwood and plywood, occasional specials. I recently scored about 50bf of red oak for $1.50/bf. They were shorts, but that's what I needed! Very friendly people, both in the warehouse and in the office. I can't believe I used to drive past them to get to HD, before I knew what they did!

I agree - seen one Rockler/Woodcraft/Harbor Freight seen them all. Not to take away from those stores, they have their place.

Timber Woodworking Machinery in Mesa -PHX's nearby east valley- has a warehouse sized store of machines and hardware, mostly new, some used -from toys to industrial machines. They also have a big lumber yard in a warehouse next door. A good source of the standard hardwoods with a relatively smaller supply of exotics at good prices.

Woodworker's source has stores in Phoenix, Tempe and Tucson. Their strength is more exotic woods.

Great place--like 20,000 ft under roof of all sorts of woods, and he's probably the biggest reseller of used machinery in AZ--virtually 80% of all items craigslisted are from him it seems (at least stuff I look at). He's got a ton of really interesting stuff in the shop, and is a distributor for jet, Steel City, and some others. Great guy, I think he's the son of the wood shop in Mesa or Chandler listed above. I like to support them, a woodworking and wood business family for sure, worth a visit especially if you like to look at old machinery and deals.

I also don't live in Bellingham, far from it I live in Sydney Australia, but I cannot more highly praise the Internet Sales division of Hardware Sales. Unlike many others with which I have had dealings (both Local and within the US) they have been by far the most responsive. This has not been with a single order but with at least five over the past year. Goods have been shipped within hours ( 1 to 4 on a regular basis) and delivered generally within 2 days across the Pacific.

So even if you cannot see it as David reccommends, you can deal with them over the internet with very satisfactory results.
