View Full Version : Cutting up a Burl for blanks

Hey Mister how do you cut a burl up into blanks.
Here's how I do it.
I want to save every pound of wood I can that is useable.
This is a before and after set of pics.
I cut the small cap off the end first then I turned her and cut the biggest section in half at a angle.
Having a chainsaw big enough to get the job done is also a big deal and sure makes the job a whole easier.

Boy Gary that is some good looking burl. Can't wait to see the turnings out of that.

That's a pretty good sized burl... Maybe I missed it, but what kind of burl is that?

Gary, that is a lot of burl for such a small tree!! Has to be lots of treasures in that one.

That is a Sourwood Burl---- the Dolly pic is from file the day it arrived here.
Now moving on.
Here's one of the big blocks on the lathe.
Someone had been living in the burl. Forced me to change plans and flip the tenon to the other end.
Lots of bark incluesions.

It aint' over 'till its over! You just never know what's inside those burls, do you. Like John noted, that' sure is a lot of burl for that size tree:eek:. Thanks for posting.
