Well I went to run a errand a few days ago and came home to a box on the steps. Name on it was Cathy. She had sent me a oak burl. So a couple of days ago I put it on the lathe and starting slowing turning a HF. It was making a lot of creaking and cracking sounds so decided to do the saran wrap route. Worked pretty well but the top just imploded and it did keep things from flying in all directions. So studied it for a bit and decided it was just to pretty so went the bowl route. My wife thinks it is just beautiful and so do I. It will go up on my mantle to be proudly displayed. It is 7 1/2" across and 4" high. Finished with one coat of AO to pop it and several light coats of lacquer. Thank you Cathy for a wonderful piece of wood.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Sure turned out pretty. But, the next time you turn on the lathe, don't forget, you don't have to duck every few seconds.

Thanks everyone. The wood actually came from Cathy Schaewe. I have to agree that burl is a pretty piece and is placed in my mantle as a special piece.

Bernie,

I am venturing a guess that an outside wrap of tape or plastic wrap was in order? Looks like some pucker factor with this...........nice wood, nice turning and even nicer gesture from a classy lady.

Bernie, I am amazed that piece stayed intact!! Superb character, and a really neat mantle piece!

Thanks again. Well it stayed together with saran wrap and a couple of times with a wrap or two of duct tape while doing the inside. It did work out though and yes Roger for a while the pucker factor was quite high.

It doesn't look like there is much solid wood (if any:)) holding that one together! Well done on making it to the finish line!

Thanks Dick and Baxter. No Baxter there wasn't much but like I said saran and some super glue got me there.

As you likely are aware, I also like those challenging pieces of wood with more air than solid and you did a great job holding it all together. I think the base could be smaller but overall it is a lovely piece.

Who would of thought that would stay in one piece...I know as a former Safety Director you wore your face protector.....right??

Thank God for super glue & duct tape. It's amazing this made it to a finished piece, very well done, Bernie. Can't find much more character than that!

I missed this thread until now! Bernie, I'm glad you like it. I didn't realize that bark went all the way through. I'm really impressed you managed to turn that in one piece!

Saran wrap, kevlar vest, face shield, and some serious praying I'm guessing. Glad you stuck with it Bernie, it was worth all the effort.
