A friend asked me to make a bowl from this. His father brought it from the Phillipines maybe 20 years ago. It's about 8" in the horizontal dimension in the photo. The crud on the top seems to be hot melt glue where it had been converted to a lamp for a while.

It reminds me a little of mango root. Anyone?

I agree that it looks like a root, but I'm not sure beyond that. A cut surface might reveal a little more about the possible species. I hope you'll post some photos of the process and finished piece as that looks like it's gonna yield something with a fair bit of natural character.

Manzanita root?

I think you're right. Looks like it's going to dull my tools--it's full of soil. I guess I'll turn the air up to 120 PSI and get as much as I can. The good news is there is apparently no finish. It looks like it rolled around the the surf for a while.

There's no accounting for taste, but that must have been one butt-ugly lamp.

Thanks for the input.

Look like some kind of deformed sheep head if you look at it just right.

That made me about fall out my chair laughing! That completely made my day worthwhile!

I agree that must have been one butt ugly lamp, I bet it's more interesting on the inside...
