I have seen several ways of signing one's work, but I like the older style of actually stamping the wood rather than carving/burning. I was wondering if anyone knew of a
place getting a custom stamp made? I like that pressed/stamped look.

"Stamped" as in applying ink to the wood? I would think any "print" shop should be able to make you one - check the small newspaper publishers in your area.

We (wifelet & I) used to have self inking stamp sets made up w/ our return address for the mail years ago.

stamp, as in some type of hammered stamp which leaves a signature pressed into the wood.

Any good office supply store can make you a custom rubber stamp for cheap. I think I have about $10.00 in mine. You just need to design how you want it to look. Anything you can print out on a computer can be put on the stamp.

I got my branding iron from http://www.brandingirons.com (http://www.brandingirons.com/)
I gave them my custom artwork and they made an exact match to it. It's not a stamp, but I don't know if an impression can be made in hardwoods without using a heated iron. Custom irons, with your own artwork are not cheap, but it is a lot more impressive than the cookie cutter irons you can get for cheaper.

I get my steel stamps made by Buckeye engraving Co. Google them. G.Wilson cost $75.00 several years ago. You can go online and pick out any style font you like and tell them. They will make it for you. Also specify if you want the stamp for wood only,or for metal. they made the wood stamps more acute so they will cut the wood more cleanly. the metal stamps work just fine, too. I use my stamp for wood and metal.

Thanks for that info. I just ordered a custom stamp from them.

Question though -you apply anything to the stamped area and then wipe off for more contrast?

There are plenty of people here who can make ink stamps with detail that you won't find in many stores. Check our Friends of The Creek Directory for someone close to you and send them a Private Message.

Custom irons, with your own artwork are not cheap, but it is a lot more impressive than the cookie cutter irons you can get for cheaper. They can be done for a modest price, providing that you can do the modeling yourself. http://www.shapeways.com/ can do 3D printing in metal. I don't think it would stand up to being a stamp like the OP wants. There's some decent discussions on BT3Central http://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=52844
Alex did his first one for $6 http://www.thefrankes.com/wp/?p=1883
