This timber (Australian) has a coarse Hair Like bark that closely resembles thick hair to 3/4 of an inch thick hence the common name. Cut across the grain this way can be very brittle, not for the fainthearted. The two halves are reversed to have sapwood top and bottom.

Peter, that certainly is an interesting wood! Sounds like it is not one for bowls and HFs!! But, it sure makes a nice pen.

I agree, very cool wood... like a Zebrawood that's been magnified to show more of the grain. Wish we could get some chunks of that here for cheap.

Beautiful pen Peter! Love the wood! Almost a reverse coloring of any of the curly woods we have here!

Beautiful again, Peter. Looks like tiger stripes.

Beautiful stuff... What's the difference between hairy oak and sheoak? I just turned a piece from Aussie sheoak and it looks very similar.

Like the tiger stripe effect. How well does it finish?

David, The two trees have some things in common but Hairy Oak is totally unique in its growth of hairy bark and internal main characteristics both can be beautiful in their medullary rays when quarter cut.

Jim the timber finishes with a superior glow.

Peter, it reminds me not just of a tiger but more specifically the reportedly extent Tasmanian tiger. Not sure while probably just the power of suggestion since you are close to that part of the world.
